Stirling Prize nomination for Newhall Be

Newhall Be has been nominated for the pretigious Striling Prize for the best building of the year. Sophie Bates was project architect for Newhall Be, developing the design from planning stages to construction on site of phase one, while working at Alison Brooks Architects.

Newhal Be has been praised for its innovative approach to achieve high density housing that maintains spacious, open plan living by using courtyards and roof terraces to carefully integrate outdoor space into a small plot. Use of angled walls allow views out between neighbouring buildings and sloping ceilings provide character. The exterior of the houses are clad in black siberian larch, echoing the vernacular barns in the surrounding Essex countryside.
