A transformation from 1960's empty bungalow to two storey, contemporary, light filled family home in Hampton, London.
Located in a 1960's close in Hampton, the location offered huge potential. The plot is set in the corner of the close, with a generous garden wrapping the existing bungalow on three sides. There was space to extend out to the east side - creating a morning-lit playroom, pilates studio and master bathroom above, widen the garage to form a vaulted ceiling bedroom and bathroom, extend to the rear to create a generous living space and also extend the roof space at 1st floor to create a master bedroom and office overlooking the garden.
Light is key to the design - each room has windows or rooflights from at least two directions, so there is always movement of light and shadows throughout the day. There are double height spaces to the hall and living room, and views through spaces to others to give a glimpse and draw you through the spaces. At night the lighting scheme has been carefully designed (by Sophie Bates Architects) to provide a softness and calm to the spaces. Hidden LED lighting strips wash the sloping ceilings and hallway wall, and, tucked up behind an oak shelf, also wash down the kitchen wall.
The materials are neutral - timber and warm white - which along with the lighting dominate the palette, allowing the views to the garden beyond to become the focus.
Permission for the refurbishment and extension was achieved through a number of separate applications under planning and permitted development to maximise the potential of the home.
I didn’t know it is possible to fall in love with a house until I lived in one designed by architect Sophie Bates.
Sophie sets the bar for contemporary architecture that is distinguished, practical, embodies harmonious internal flow, as well as great structural design. For us Sophie took a 1960’s bungalow and turned it into a modern grand designs eco house.
It has been a total joy working with Sophie. She has this wonderful balance of creating a modern architectural masterpiece whilst making the client feel very much part of the design process. Sophie has a talent for interpreting what our house looked like in my head and making it come to fruition. A day doesn’t go by without us reflecting on the incredible home Sophie has created for our family. Sophie designed an extraordinary space, a bespoke house for life.
From our first meeting with Sophie Bates, she came to the table having thoroughly researched the house we wanted to remodel, the area and the local planning history. This attention to detail continues with Sophie in every aspect of her work. This is a reflection of Sophie’s other strength, her diligence managing and delivering a build from conception through planning, contracts and construction to a high-end specification."
