It’s fantastic to see House on the Hill win the House of the Year Architectural Award. As part of a great team at Alison Brooks Architects (ABA) I worked on the second phase of this beautiful contemporary home, leading and designing the technical detail design of the project. My role included detailing the interior and exterior of the home including the crisp, angular glazing junctions with the dark grey cladding and angled green roof. Working on this project was a fantastic opportunity - and the attention to detail that is needed to deliver a beautifully crafted home continues remains part of my approach in all the projects I work on.
Set overlooking the Severn Estuary in Gloucester, the house layout maximises on views from every room. By angling the views, each view is different. The house contrasts the original stone cottage, converted under the first phase of works also by ABA. To the centre of the plan is a double height void with rooflight over, flooding the kitchen with light. A carefully detailed stair houses some of the beautiful artwork the owners David and Jennie have collected over the years.
The final stage of the project, which took place after I had left ABA to set up Sophie Bates Architects, is a pool house framed by a walled garden.
