Raising the roof - London extension and refurbishment
Sometimes the greater the challenge, the more interesting the result. Securing planning permission to dramatically improve the aesthetics of an interwar house in a conservation area and provide a contemporary, light-filled 107sqm of space to the existing family house required careful strategy, material detailing and attention to context.
Small interventions can have a big impact. There is a four-metre wide glass dormer to look over the extensive garden, a roof light over the shower to the master en suite and a bespoke contemporary stair.
The journey through the space was key to the design, puncturing the building skin to allow for natural light and shadows as you move through the interior. To protect from the railway noise, acoustic glass, wall linings and insulation were carefully selected. To prevent overheating a roof light to the top of the stairs creates stack ventilation; as the warm air rises cooler air is drawn through the house.
Three zinc-clad dormers complement the slate roof, providing vital space to the interior, and define the layout of the plan. The contractor was Analytic Building Contractors.
We love the light and design of the new extension, it is a lovely space, well chosen combinations of materials and full of neat design touches.Teddington House, London
