Transformation of a rundown, sub-divided house into a bespoke family home
Before the renovation, the existing house was subdivided into bedsits, had little connection to the rear garden and a number of small living spaces with a shallow cellar underneath. The owners, Jennifer and Jeremy, bought the house at auction to convert to a family home, and benefitted from the lower VAT rate for conversion.
The design has transformed the building, creating a bespoke, family home, generating 60% profit for the owners. The main design steps were to:
- Drop the floor to the living spaces to utilise the height of the cellar, increasing the ceiling height
- Open up the back rooms into one wide space
- Extend out to the back
- Add a vaulted roof with rooflight to add further height and drama
- Remove the internal doors to the entrance hall so it is open plan to the living space to the rear
- Glaze the side of the front living room to connect it to the hall
- Convert the loft to create a master suite
- Reconfigure the stair and 1st floor bathrooms.
The extension form keeps the eaves low and allows light to the neighbour’s living space and garden, setting back from the boundary to the rear. The sliding screens to the west facing garden allow light in and views out when stacked and shading during the summer months.
We commissioned Sophie to work magic on our very rundown property. We had a few ideas of what we wanted but Sophie added so much more imagination, ideas and flair to our project. She was always punctual, got great quotes for all the work, and all round did an outstanding job. We will most definitely engage Sophie again the next time we have a renovation.
